    Title: Nutritional analysis, antioxidant activities and detection of bioactive compounds in different extracts of Cambodian Basil (Ocimum basilicum L) and Bangladeshi Basil by TLC and GC MS and their medicinal uses

    In this study, the nutrient contents such as moisture, protein, carbohydrates, fat, ash, and crude fiber were found to be 87.53%, 3.50%, 4.96%, 1.80%, 1.46%, 0.75% and 90.22%, 2.80%, 3.58%, 1.52%, 1.28% and 0.60% in Cambodian Basil and Bangladeshi basil, respectively. Antioxidant activity of water, methanol and ethanol extracts of Cambodian Basil and Bangladeshi Basil were determined by TLC and all extracts of Cambodian Basil showed strong antioxidant activity. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of Alkaloids, Tannins, Saponin, Flavonoids, Cardiac Glycosides, Carbohydrates, Proteins and Amino Acids in water, methanol and ethanol  extracts of Cambodian Basil and Bangladeshi Basil.The phytochemical compounds present in water, methanol and ethanol extracts of Cambodian Basil showed the strong antioxidant activity other than Bangladeshi Basil.The phytochemicals present in all the extracts of Cambodian Basil and Bangladeshi Basil may be useful to prevent different types of diseases. From TLC analysis, two phytochemical compounds were found to be present in water extracts of both Cambodian Basil and Bangladeshi Basil whereas other three phytochemical compounds present in Cambodian Basil and another four compounds present in Bangladeshi Basil. In methanol and ethanol extracts, five phytochemical compounds were found in both Cambodian and Bangladeshi Basil. From the spectrophotometric analysis, three same bioactive compounds with wavelengths 663 nm, 409 nm, and 227 nm were identified in methanol extracts of Cambodian Basil and Bangladeshi Basil respectively.In GC-MS analysis, 8 and 11 compounds were identified in methanol extracts of Cambodian Basil and Bangladeshi Basil, respectively and among these compounds, three compounds namely Dodecane, 1-fluoro-, n-Hexadecanoic acid Dodecanoic acid, 1,2,3-propanetriyl ester were found in both Cambodian and Bangladeshi Basil which may be useful for the preparation of essential drugs in pharmaceutical industries.

    Biography of the presenting author

    I have completed my DSc Degree in Biological Information from Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan in 2006 . Currently I am working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology under the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Noakhali Science and Technology, Noakhali, Bangladesh and also served as a Chairman of the same Department for more than two tenures. I have received a “Black Garlic Ambassador Award” in from Japan in September 2018 for the development of three types of Black Garlic in Bangladesh first time. I have published more than 20 papers in reputed journals and attending more than 15 International conferences in home and abroad and  have been serving as a reviewer in reputed journals.
