    Flavonol Abundance in Early Flower Stage of French Marigold (Tagetes patula): A Metabolomic Study

    Abstract

    French marigolds (Tagetes patula) have been recognized for their rich flavonoid content, which demonstrates significant biological activities, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite their phytochemical potential, limited information exists regarding the dynamic changes in flavonoid content across various flower developmental stages. This study explores the dynamic changes in flavonoid content across four developmental stages of Tagetes patula cv. Sudamala Barak marigold flowers, aiming to optimize metabolite extraction and enhance understanding of biochemical mechanisms. The stages include closed flower buds (Stage 1, S1), partially opened buds (Stage 2, S2), fully opened flowers (Stage 3, S3), and mature flowers with strong orange coloration (Stage 4, S4). Petals were extracted using 70% methanol containing 0.1% HCl for analysis. Metabolite profiling was conducted using LC-HRMS, identifying 93 compounds across the stages. Notably, the early developmental stage (S1) exhibited a high abundance of flavonol compounds such as patuletin, luteolin, isorhamnetin, and myricetin. These findings offer valuable insights into the biochemical profiles of marigold flowers, facilitating deeper exploration of their phytochemical potential and supporting advancements in the utilization of high-value flavonoid compounds.

    Biography of the presenting author

    Dewi Sukma is a Lecturer at IPB University, Indonesia, and a member of the Plant Biotechnology Division, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB University), Dramaga Campus, Bogor 16680, Indonesia. She currently serves as Head of the Master’s Program in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology at the Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University, and as Chief Editor of the Indonesian Journal of Horticulture.

    At IPB University, she teaches a wide range of courses including Principles of Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Propagation, Ornamental Plants, Biotechnology in Plant Breeding, Plant Growth Regulators, and Plant Growth and Developmental Regulation.

    Her research focuses on plant tissue culture propagation, biotechnology approaches in plant breeding, biochemical, cellular, and molecular plant analysis, molecular marker development, plant disease resistance mechanisms, and genetic transformation. Much of her work emphasizes ornamental plants, particularly orchids and marigolds, with the aim of advancing breeding strategies and enhancing genetic improvement in horticultural crops.
