    Title: Therapeutic Antibody Manufacturing: Recent Progress in mammalian cell / cell cuture engineering

    Mammalian cell lines are indispensable platforms for the industrial-scale production of therapeutic antibodies (biologics), owing to their capacity for accurate folding, assembly, and post-translational modifications. Among these mammalian cells, Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells which was established more than 60 years ago, have emerged as the gold standard for producing therapeutic proteins with high reliability. Recently, we established novel cell lines derived from Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) lung and ovary tissues, broadening the scope of biopharmaceutical manufacturing. These cells were gradually adapted to serum-free conditions by reducing the serum concentration stepwise. The resulting serum-free cell pools were designated as Chinese hamster lung (CHL)-YN (Riken bioresource bank: RCB5004)1), and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-MK2), respectively. Both CHL-YN and CHO-MK cell lines demonstrated rapid proliferation, with doubling times shorter than 10 hours. In this presentation, we will introduce the characteristics of both cell lines and metabolism3) and discuss the impact of these new cell lines on cell/ cell culure engineering in therapeutic antibody manufacturing.

    Biography of the presenting author

    Takeshi OMASA has completed his PhD in 1992 from Osaka University and Assistant and Associate professor of Osaka University and become the full professor at Tokushima University at 2010. He moved Osaka University at 2015. He is now the Dean of Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Osaka and President of Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB) from 2022. He has published more than 150 papers in the field of Biochemical Engineering.
